Lesson · from Bird's Eye on NESO Now

What a brownfield is

Next, a lesson. Federal law describes a brownfield as real property whose expansion, redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence, or potential presence, of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant.

Common contaminants at these sites include lead, asbestos and petroleum. Addressing the real or perceived threat of contamination prevents or limits harmful exposure.

The Environmental Protection Agency's brownfields program has converted once neglected sites to boost local economies and enhance quality of life for nearby residents.
